Cycling Shoes
Not only is a good cycle enough to meet the needs of a good cyclist; another equally important thing is the pair of cycling shoes. If you think, a nice pair of running shoes will be enough for cycling, then, think again. The compliant running shoes will reduce the thrust applied on pedals and also create a sloppy fit between the pedals and shoes, which is never desirable. That's why, cycling shoes are so important for the cyclist.
Cycling shoes are designed specifically to attach the cycle pedals by a clip-in system. This increases the efficiency of power-transfer by cyclist via allowing to pull his upstroke and effectively push the down stroke. There are four basic variants of cycling shoes:
For road racing- highly smooth; rigid sole is bent slightly at the ball of feet to focus power on that point. They contain a protruding cleat for attachment with pedals, which make the unsuitable for walking.
For touring- less rigid & with recessed cleat, allowing rider to walk and ride effectively.
For mountain biking- equipped with small cleats and studs in the sole, so that rider can climb or walk off the bike when needed.
For indoor cycling (spinning) - they have characteristics of both road & touring shoes, having a firm sole and limited traction.
A proper fitting of cycling shoes is very important for their effectiveness. The structure of male and female feet being separate, the cycling shoes also show male & female varieties.
