Snow shoes are specially designed footwear meant for walking over snow. The basic principle of snow shoes is that, it distributes the total body weight of the user over a larger area, so that, users foot doesn't sink completely in the snow. Although having a long historical background, modern snow shoes, as we know today, were developed in early ‘70s. From them on, lots of varieties have evolved using latest technologies.
Snow shoes can be broadly classified into 3types:
Though various sizes are mentioned above, larger individuals should go for larger snow shoes for adequate support. There are 2types of bindings-1) limited-rotation- whereby the toe is restricted within the decking: preferred for racing purposes, & 2)free-rotation- toes pass below decking: preferred for climbing, as allows kick-steps using toe crampons present under ball of feet.
Snow shoes are resistant to rough exposure, as they are made of aluminium & synthetics. Only care needed is to keep them dry before storing.
